Arte Azione 1

The experimental artistic action Art-action 1 fits into a wider project which the “La Vispa Teresa” association is carrying out in and for the Ortles-Similaun district. The project is aimed, on the one hand, at favouring processes of participation and belonging within the district and on the other hand at attracting the attention of people coming from outside the district, thus trying to provide decentralized and variform cultural alternatives in the centripetal reality of the city of Bolzano.
Art-action 1 is a symbolic contribution which aims at provoking real change. It fits into an artistic-social-participation project whose centrality is not represented by the results, but by the process itself. The key concepts on which Art-action 1 is based are curiosity, conviviality and fun as a positive provocation finalised towards awakening the reaction of the inhabitants of the district. The art-action 1 project is a challenge. Complete strangers who decide to share a dinner or lunch. One of the most intimate and personal acts through which to get to know one another, putting oneself at stake and opening doors which on first glance appear to be closed. Art-action 1 wishes to create the possiblity for comparision.
In the first phase of the project, through a communication campaign, the collective offered the city a “blind date”. The campaign saw the involvement of daily newspapers and local radio and took advantage of the various advertising spaces in the city in order to announce a date in the Ortles Similaun district.
In the second phase, the collective involved the residents through a kind of “scratchcard” game distributed to all the homes in the district. The distribution involved 50 people on bicycles each with the same white t-shirt displaying the project logo. The 50 bicycles crossed the entire city in a very long line, until finally arriving in the district for the blind date advertised in the previous weeks. In the district everyone handed out the scratchcards “SCRATCH AND INVITE” to the various households. The “SCRATCH AND INVITE” card was specially designed for the district, and was exclusively aimed at the district. Through the card, the residents could take part in the game by inviting three members of the collective to lunch or dinner, each of whom had the task to collect a particular, specified typology of material for the occasion (audio, visual, photographic, textual, tactile…)
The third phase of the project saw the non-linear processing of the material collected over the course of the dinners. A portrait of the district was put together and printed on an 80 metre tablecloth and laid over a dinner table on the occasion of the closing event of the project. An “urban dining room” was created, conceived as a banquet which crossed over the entire district and to which the whole city was invited.
