Serie Imperiale

Serie Imperiale is the first work by Flavio Favelli for Valsamoggia – where the Florentine artist lives and works – curated by Elisa del Prete and Silvia Litardi. The visual identity developed by Lupo Burtscher for the project evolves together with the work and recounts its realisation stages through stratifications of typography and color. For the project, Lupo Burtscher designed the printed and digital communication materials and a catalogue.

Visual identity and communication materials

In Serie Imperiale Favelli chooses as the subject for his work two stamps depicting Vittorio Emanuele III (issued in 1929 and in use until 1946) which have undergone an “overprint” – the superimposition of a stamp that altered the original image. The idea of overprinting recurs in the identity developed for the exhibition: a red-coloured base is overprinted with a purple color that adds (and removes) information, thus generating different images for each project event. Just like Favelli’s mural, the identity develops and changes over time, unfolding the three phases of the work – painting, detachment and filling.

The catalogue

Edited by Corraini Edizioni, the catalogue alternates essays and interviews with photographic inserts to illustrate the evolution of Favelli’s work – from the places that originally hosted it until the presentation of the final diptych at the Rocca dei Bentivoglio in Bazzano. The idea of overprinting recurs as a central motif in the layout through typography, colour and image overlays in the texts’ opening pages and in different details. The images in the essays are almost forcedly inserted into the text overlapping the typography.
