Costruire sul costruito / Auf Gebautem bauen

Susanne Waiz’s exhibition Costruire sul costruito / Auf Gebautem bauen (Building on the built) presents 19 projects undertaken in South Tyrol, which represent possible approaches to cases of existing building. Composed of large-format photographs and sound frames on the history of the individual works, the exhibition guides the visitor through an almost poetic path on the subject in question. Lupo Burtscher designed the travelling exhibition and the book.

“Building on the built” is a metaphor for developing new architecture within a historical context. A respectful approach based on knowledge of architectural heritage is not in conflict with contemporary architecture: The dialogue between old and new offers the opportunity to reinterpret existing structures and to improve their intended use, or create a new one. In the exhibition’s book, recent examples of the valorisation and recovery of historic buildings in South Tyrol are illustrated. The analysis ranges from a medieval castle to urban residences and farms, and includes modern architecture.
